What are Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets are the once-daily oral form of Wegovy, a prescription-only weight loss medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide – the same GLP-1 receptor agonist used in the weekly Wegovy injection.

Licensed by the MHRA in June 2026, Wegovy tablets are the first oral GLP-1 medicine approved in the UK for weight management. Semaglutide works by mimicking a naturally occurring gut hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which acts on appetite centres in the brain to help you feel fuller for longer and reduce food cravings.

Wegovy tablets also slow the rate at which the stomach empties and support the body’s natural release of insulin, helping to keep blood sugar levels more stable. When used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, they offer the benefits of GLP-1 treatment without the need for injections.

How effective are Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets have been shown to produce weight loss comparable to the weekly Wegovy injection. The pivotal OASIS 4 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, studied the once-daily 25 mg tablet in adults with obesity or overweight, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and reported the following results:

  • Adults taking the maintenance dose (25 mg once daily) lost an average of 13.6% of their starting body weight over 64 weeks.
  • Among participants who took the tablet exactly as directed, average weight loss rose to 16.6% – and around 1 in 3 lost 20% or more of their starting body weight.
  • Participants on placebo lost only around 2.2% of their body weight in the same study.

These results show that Wegovy tablets can produce substantially greater and more sustained weight loss than diet and exercise alone. Because the tablet is absorbed through the stomach, taking it correctly – on an empty stomach, with a small amount of water – is essential to achieving results like these. Individual results vary, and ongoing treatment is required to maintain weight loss long-term.

How do Wegovy tablets work?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, which mimics a hormone your body produces naturally after eating. By acting on the appetite centres in your brain and slowing the digestive process, it helps you eat less without feeling deprived – all from a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection.

Who is eligible for Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets are intended for people who need additional support with weight management and meet specific clinical criteria. They aren’t suitable for everyone, but if you have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone – or you would prefer a needle-free alternative to weight loss injections – they may be an option worth exploring.

Here’s how it works:

  • Eligibility: You’ll usually need a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
  • Lifestyle support: Wegovy tablets are licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity – not as a stand-alone solution.
  • When it’s considered: Wegovy tablets are typically considered for people who have already tried lifestyle changes without lasting results, and for those already using weight loss injections who would rather take a daily tablet – your clinician can manage the switch.
  • Daily routine: You’ll need to be able to take your tablet on an empty stomach each morning and wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking – this routine is essential for the medicine to work.
  • Assessment process: You’ll start by completing a confidential online questionnaire about your health, medical history, and weight.
  • Clinical review: A Trimu clinician will then review your answers and your goals to decide whether Wegovy tablets are appropriate and safe for you.

Who shouldn’t use Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets aren’t suitable for everyone. You should not take them if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant.
  • Have ever had an allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in Wegovy tablets.
  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a rare type of thyroid cancer) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).
  • Have a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease – including severe gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) – diabetic retinopathy, or end-stage kidney disease.
  • Are unable to follow the empty-stomach dosing routine of taking the tablet each morning and waiting at least 30 minutes before food, drink, or other oral medicines.
  • Are under 18 years of age.

How to take Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets are simple to take, but the routine matters. You take one tablet once a day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach – food or drink in your stomach stops the medicine being absorbed properly. Treatment starts at 1.5 mg daily and is increased step by step to 4 mg, 9 mg, and then the 25 mg maintenance dose, staying at each level for at least a month to give your body time to adjust. There are no needles, no sharps bins, and no refrigeration – just a daily habit to build into your morning.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1

Take it first thing

  • Take your tablet when you first wake up, on an empty stomach, after at least 8 hours without eating or drinking – for most people, a normal night’s sleep takes care of this.
  • Check the strength on the pack matches your prescribed dose, and take only one tablet per day.
  • Take it at around the same time each morning – a consistent routine makes the empty-stomach rule easy to keep.

Step 2

Swallow whole with a little water

  • Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120 ml of plain water – about half a glass. Do not split, crush, or chew it, as this stops the medicine being absorbed properly.
  • It may feel counterintuitive, but sticking to a small amount of water matters – drinking more actually reduces how much semaglutide your body absorbs.
  • Use plain water only – do not take your tablet with tea, coffee, juice, or any other drink, and do not take it with food.

Step 3

Wait 30 minutes

  • After taking your tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other medicines by mouth.
  • The wait gives the tablet time to be absorbed through the stomach – cutting it short is the most common reason for reduced results.
  • Once the 30 minutes are up, you can have breakfast and take your other morning medicines as usual.

Step 4

Build up your dose

  • You’ll start on 1.5 mg once daily, moving up to 4 mg, 9 mg, and then 25 mg, spending at least a month at each step – this gradual build-up helps minimise side effects such as nausea.
  • Only move up to the next dose when your Trimu clinician confirms it – if side effects are troublesome, you may stay longer at a lower dose.
  • If you’re switching from Wegovy injections, your clinician will tell you when to take your first tablet – usually starting the 25 mg dose one week after your last weekly injection.

Obesity is a chronic condition, and the clinical evidence shows that ongoing treatment is usually needed to maintain weight loss. In studies of semaglutide, participants who stopped treatment regained around two-thirds of their lost weight within a year, with cardiometabolic benefits also reverting toward baseline.

For most people, Wegovy tablets are intended as a long-term treatment used alongside sustained changes to diet and physical activity. Because absorption of the tablet depends on taking it correctly each morning, keeping to the dosing routine is also key to long-term results. Your Trimu clinician will review your progress regularly and discuss whether to continue, adjust the dose, or eventually taper treatment based on your individual response, tolerance, and weight management goals.

Before starting Wegovy tablets, tell your Trimu clinician if you have:

  • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes – particularly if you take insulin or sulphonylureas, as the dose may need to be adjusted to reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • A history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or kidney problems
  • Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Stomach or digestive problems, including gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) – the tablet relies on absorption through the stomach and is not recommended if gastroparesis is severe
  • An operation under general anaesthesia planned – your surgical team needs to know you take a GLP-1 medicine, because it slows stomach emptying
  • An underactive thyroid treated with levothyroxine – your thyroid blood tests may need closer monitoring

Stop taking Wegovy tablets and seek medical advice straight away if you experience severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away (a possible sign of pancreatitis), signs of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing), symptoms of severe dehydration, or any sudden change in your vision. Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy and should be stopped at least two months before trying to conceive.

If you miss your morning dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time the following morning. Because the tablet only works on an empty stomach, a missed dose can’t simply be taken later in the day once you’ve eaten.

Never take two tablets in one day to make up for a missed dose, as this increases the risk of side effects. The occasional missed dose won’t undo your progress.

If you find you’re regularly forgetting doses, or you’ve missed several days in a row, contact your Trimu clinician for advice before continuing – your dose plan may need adjusting.

One of the practical advantages of Wegovy tablets is that they don’t need to be kept in the fridge:

  • Store your tablets at room temperature, below 30°C – no refrigeration is needed at any point
  • Keep each tablet in its original packaging until the moment you take it, to protect it from moisture and light
  • Because there’s no cold chain to worry about, tablets are easy to store at home and to travel with
  • Check the expiry date on the pack and don’t use tablets past it
  • Keep Wegovy and all medicines out of the sight and reach of children

Like all medicines, Wegovy tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. The side-effect profile is essentially the same as the Wegovy injection – most are mild to moderate, more common during dose escalation, and tend to ease as your body adjusts.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Headache, tiredness, or dizziness

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Indigestion, bloating, or burping
  • Gallstones
  • Hair loss

Serious but rare side effects: seek urgent medical advice if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain (a possible sign of pancreatitis), signs of a serious allergic reaction, any sudden change or loss of vision, or symptoms of low blood sugar (especially if you have diabetes). You can report suspected side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Tell your Trimu clinician about all the medicines you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplements. Because Wegovy tablets are absorbed through the stomach, the timing of other oral medicines matters more than with the injection:

  • All other oral medicines – take your Wegovy tablet at least 30 minutes before any other tablets or capsules. Taking them together can reduce the amount of semaglutide your body absorbs, and slower stomach emptying can also affect how other medicines are absorbed.
  • Insulin and sulphonylureas (such as gliclazide) – the risk of low blood sugar is increased, and your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted.
  • Levothyroxine – oral semaglutide can increase levels of thyroid hormone, so your thyroid blood tests may need closer monitoring.
  • Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants – more frequent monitoring of your INR may be needed when starting treatment.
  • Other GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic, Saxenda, or Mounjaro) – Wegovy must never be used alongside another GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Oral contraceptives remain effective while taking Wegovy tablets, though if you have severe vomiting or diarrhoea you should follow the usual advice in your contraceptive leaflet. Wegovy is not known to interact with alcohol, but drinking alcohol while losing weight can worsen side effects such as nausea and may increase the risk of pancreatitis and low blood sugar.

Wegovy tablets are licensed as a long-term treatment for chronic weight management. Most weight loss occurs within the first 12 to 18 months of treatment, after which weight typically stabilises. To maintain your results, the clinical evidence supports continuing treatment beyond this point alongside sustained lifestyle changes.

Treatment is reviewed regularly by your Trimu clinician. If Wegovy isn’t working for you – for example, if you haven’t lost at least 5% of your starting body weight after reaching the full maintenance dose – it may be discontinued. If treatment is stopped, the appetite-suppressing effects of semaglutide wear off and weight regain is common, so any decision to stop should be planned with your clinician and supported by ongoing healthy habits.
