Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. Treatment is subject to an online consultation and clinical review by a Trimu prescriber.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss medication that contains the active ingredient semaglutide, a member of a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists.
It works by mimicking a naturally occurring gut hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which acts on appetite centres in the brain to help you feel fuller for longer and reduce food cravings.
Wegovy also slows the rate at which the stomach empties and supports the body’s natural release of insulin, helping to keep blood sugar levels more stable. When used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Wegovy is a clinically proven aid for long-term weight management.
How effective is Wegovy?
Wegovy has been shown to be a highly effective weight loss medication in large-scale clinical trials. The pivotal STEP 1 and STEP UP trials, which together studied more than 3,300 adults, reported the following results when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity:
These results show that Wegovy can produce substantially greater and more sustained weight loss than diet and exercise alone. Individual results vary, and ongoing treatment is required to maintain weight loss long-term.

How does Wegovy work?
Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics a hormone your body produces naturally after eating. By acting on the appetite centres in your brain and slowing the digestive process, it helps you eat less without feeling deprived.
Here’s what that means for you in practice:
Reduces appetite: Wegovy acts on areas of the brain that regulate hunger, so you feel satisfied with smaller portions and less likely to overeat between meals.
Curbs cravings: By replicating the action of GLP-1, Wegovy helps reduce food cravings, making it easier to stick to healthier eating habits.
Slows digestion: Wegovy slows the rate at which food leaves your stomach, helping you feel fuller for longer after meals and supporting steadier blood sugar levels.
Supports heart health: In the SELECT trial, semaglutide 2.4 mg reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke by 20% in adults living with obesity and established cardiovascular disease.
Clinically proven: In the STEP UP trial, adults taking the 7.2 mg maintenance dose of Wegovy lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks – considerably more than is typically achieved through lifestyle changes alone.

Who is eligible for Wegovy?
Wegovy is intended for people who need additional support with weight management and meet specific clinical criteria. It isn’t suitable for everyone, but if you have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, it may be an option worth exploring.
Here’s how it works:
Who shouldn’t use Wegovy?
Wegovy isn’t suitable for everyone. You should not take Wegovy if you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant.

How to take Wegovy
Wegovy is straightforward to use once you know how. It comes as a pre-filled, single-use injection pen taken once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day – with or without food. You’ll prepare the pen, choose an injection site such as the stomach, thigh, or upper arm, and inject the dose by following the on-pen instructions. Used needles should be disposed of in the sharps bin provided, and your pen should be stored with the cap on, in line with the storage instructions in the patient information leaflet.
