Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. Treatment is subject to an online consultation and clinical review by a Trimu prescriber.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription-only weight loss medication that contains the active ingredient semaglutide, a member of a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists.

It works by mimicking a naturally occurring gut hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which acts on appetite centres in the brain to help you feel fuller for longer and reduce food cravings.

Wegovy also slows the rate at which the stomach empties and supports the body’s natural release of insulin, helping to keep blood sugar levels more stable. When used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Wegovy is a clinically proven aid for long-term weight management.

How effective is Wegovy?

Wegovy has been shown to be a highly effective weight loss medication in large-scale clinical trials. The pivotal STEP 1 and STEP UP trials, which together studied more than 3,300 adults, reported the following results when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity:

  • Adults taking the standard maintenance dose (2.4 mg weekly) lost an average of around 15% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks.
  • Adults taking the higher maintenance dose (7.2 mg weekly), recently approved by the MHRA, lost an average of 20.7% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks.
  • Participants on placebo lost only around 2.4% of their body weight in the same studies.

These results show that Wegovy can produce substantially greater and more sustained weight loss than diet and exercise alone. Individual results vary, and ongoing treatment is required to maintain weight loss long-term.

How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics a hormone your body produces naturally after eating. By acting on the appetite centres in your brain and slowing the digestive process, it helps you eat less without feeling deprived.

Here’s what that means for you in practice:

01

Reduces appetite: Wegovy acts on areas of the brain that regulate hunger, so you feel satisfied with smaller portions and less likely to overeat between meals.

02

Curbs cravings: By replicating the action of GLP-1, Wegovy helps reduce food cravings, making it easier to stick to healthier eating habits.

03

Slows digestion: Wegovy slows the rate at which food leaves your stomach, helping you feel fuller for longer after meals and supporting steadier blood sugar levels.

04

Supports heart health: In the SELECT trial, semaglutide 2.4 mg reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke by 20% in adults living with obesity and established cardiovascular disease.

05

Clinically proven: In the STEP UP trial, adults taking the 7.2 mg maintenance dose of Wegovy lost an average of 20.7% of their body weight over 72 weeks – considerably more than is typically achieved through lifestyle changes alone.

Who is eligible for Wegovy?

Wegovy is intended for people who need additional support with weight management and meet specific clinical criteria. It isn’t suitable for everyone, but if you have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, it may be an option worth exploring.

Here’s how it works:

  • Eligibility: You’ll usually need a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
  • Lifestyle support: Wegovy is licensed for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity – not as a stand-alone solution.
  • When it’s considered: Wegovy is typically considered for people who have already tried lifestyle changes and other weight loss approaches without lasting results.
  • Assessment process: You’ll start by completing a confidential online questionnaire about your health, medical history, and weight.
  • Clinical review: A Trimu clinician will then review your answers and your goals to decide whether Wegovy is appropriate and safe for you.

Who shouldn’t use Wegovy?

Wegovy isn’t suitable for everyone. You should not take Wegovy if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant.
  • Have ever had an allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in Wegovy.
  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a rare type of thyroid cancer) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).
  • Have a history of pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disease, diabetic retinopathy, or end-stage kidney disease.
  • Are under 18 years of age.

Instructions

How to take Wegovy

Wegovy is straightforward to use once you know how. It comes as a pre-filled, single-use injection pen taken once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day – with or without food. You’ll prepare the pen, choose an injection site such as the stomach, thigh, or upper arm, and inject the dose by following the on-pen instructions. Used needles should be disposed of in the sharps bin provided, and your pen should be stored with the cap on, in line with the storage instructions in the patient information leaflet.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your dose

  • Take a pen out of the fridge 30 minutes before use to allow it to reach room temperature, and check the label to make sure it matches your prescribed weekly dose. The medicine inside should be clear and colourless – do not use the pen if it looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles.
  • Wash your hands, then attach a new needle by twisting it firmly onto the pen. Carefully remove both the outer and inner needle caps.
  • Always use a new needle for each injection to keep the medicine sterile and prevent blocked needles.

Step 2

Choose your injection site

  • Wegovy can be injected into the front of your thigh, your stomach (avoiding the area immediately around the belly button), or the upper arm if someone else is helping you.
  • Rotate your injection site each week to reduce the risk of skin irritation, bruising, or lumps forming under the skin.
  • Clean the area with one of the alcohol wipes provided and let it dry. Do not inject into skin that is bruised, swollen, tender, broken, or scarred.

Step 3

Inject the medicine

  • Hold the pen so the needle goes straight into the skin and you can see the dose counter clearly.
  • Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter shows ‘0’.
  • Keep the needle in the skin and slowly count to 6 to make sure the full dose is delivered, then withdraw the needle.

Step 4

After the injection

  • Carefully guide the used needle into the outer cap on a flat surface, then push the cap fully on before unscrewing the needle and disposing of it in your sharps bin.
  • Never put the inner needle cap back on, and never leave the needle attached to the pen between injections – this can cause leakage, blocked needles, or contamination.
  • Replace the pen cap to protect the medicine from light, and store the pen as instructed in the patient information leaflet until your next dose.

FAQs

Things you should know about Wegovy

When you place your first order, we’ll set you up with everything you need to get started:

  • A sharps bin for safe needle disposal
  • Needles, plus a spare just in case
  • Alcohol wipes to keep injection sites clean
  • Your Trimu Programme Guide, packed with tips, advice, and everything you need to start treatment confidently

Obesity is a chronic condition, and the clinical evidence shows that ongoing treatment is usually needed to maintain weight loss. In the STEP 1 trial extension, participants who stopped semaglutide regained around two-thirds of their lost weight within a year, with cardiometabolic benefits also reverting toward baseline.

For most people, Wegovy is intended as a long-term treatment used alongside sustained changes to diet and physical activity. Your Trimu clinician will review your progress regularly and discuss whether to continue, adjust the dose, or eventually taper treatment based on your individual response, tolerance, and weight management goals.

Before starting Wegovy, tell your Trimu clinician if you have:

  • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes – particularly if you take insulin or sulphonylureas, as the dose may need to be adjusted to reduce the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • A history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or kidney problems
  • Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Severe stomach or digestive problems, including gastroparesis

Stop taking Wegovy and seek medical advice straight away if you experience severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away (a possible sign of pancreatitis), signs of a serious allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing), or symptoms of severe dehydration. Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy and should be stopped at least two months before trying to conceive.

If you miss a dose and your next scheduled dose is more than 48 hours away, take it as soon as you remember and continue with your usual weekly schedule.

If your next dose is due in less than 48 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on the usual day. Never take two doses to make up for a missed one, as this increases the risk of side effects.

If you miss doses for more than two weeks in a row, contact your Trimu clinician before restarting. You may need to go back to a lower dose and re-titrate to reduce the risk of side effects when resuming treatment.

To keep Wegovy working safely and effectively, it’s important to store it correctly:

  • Store unused pens in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, in their original carton, away from direct sunlight
  • Do not store the pen near the cooling element of the fridge, and never freeze it – Wegovy must be discarded if it has been frozen
  • Once in use, your pen can be kept either in the fridge (2°C to 8°C) or at room temperature below 30°C, for up to 6 weeks
  • Always replace the pen cap after use to protect the medicine from light
  • Keep Wegovy and all medicines out of the sight and reach of children

Like all medicines, Wegovy can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Most are mild to moderate, more common during dose escalation, and tend to ease as your body adjusts.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Headache, tiredness, or dizziness

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Indigestion, bloating, or burping
  • Gallstones
  • Hair loss
  • Reactions at the injection site, such as redness or itching

Serious but rare side effects: seek urgent medical advice if you experience severe, persistent stomach pain (a possible sign of pancreatitis), signs of a serious allergic reaction, or symptoms of low blood sugar (especially if you have diabetes). A full list of side effects is included in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication. You can report suspected side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Tell your Trimu clinician about all the medicines you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplements. Wegovy can interact with several other medications:

  • Insulin and sulphonylureas (such as gliclazide) – the risk of low blood sugar is increased, and your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted.
  • Oral medicines – because Wegovy slows stomach emptying, the absorption of some oral medications, including antibiotics and certain heart medications, may be affected.
  • Warfarin and other oral anticoagulants – more frequent monitoring of your INR may be needed when starting Wegovy.
  • Other GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic, Saxenda, or Mounjaro) – Wegovy must never be used alongside another GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Wegovy is not known to interact with alcohol, but drinking alcohol while losing weight can worsen side effects such as nausea and may increase the risk of pancreatitis and low blood sugar.

Wegovy is licensed as a long-term treatment for chronic weight management. Most weight loss occurs within the first 12 to 18 months of treatment, after which weight typically stabilises. To maintain your results, the clinical evidence supports continuing treatment beyond this point alongside sustained lifestyle changes.

Treatment is reviewed regularly by your Trimu clinician. If Wegovy isn’t working for you – for example, if you haven’t lost at least 5% of your starting body weight after reaching the full maintenance dose – it may be discontinued. If treatment is stopped, the appetite-suppressing effects of semaglutide wear off and weight regain is common, so any decision to stop should be planned with your clinician and supported by ongoing healthy habits.
